If you are in the midst of the dreaded college application process (or even if you have a student just starting high school), join Aurelia and Suzanne Luse from College Expert as they discuss the role parents should play in the college search process, how to encourage your kids to take a proactive role in meeting college officials, and why they should take four years of math and English in high school, even if they don’t need those particular credits.

Parenting My Teen - Show #32

Apr 14, 2008 Author: Christina | Filed under: Parenting My Teen

It’s prom season and this week Aurelia discusses how to plan for the prom with her guest, Vanessa Van Petten from On Teens Today.

Teens often have idealized dreams of what their prom night will be like and planning can be overwhelming and emotional. Printing out checklists and helping your teen manage their time for planning can help alleviate some stress. Prom costs can also be staggering and Vanessa has some creative tips for cutting the prom costs.

And many teens dream about what will happen after the prom, so open communication before the prom is imperative. Talk to your kids about the dangers drinking, drugs, and sex, and help them make safe after-prom plans.

Do you know the difference between a crabby teen and one who might be depressed? Sometimes the symptoms are very much alike, such as changes in appetite or sleeping patterns, but sometimes teens also exhibit signs of anxiety, frustration, or anger when they are depressed.

Aurelia’s guest this week is social worker Gary Direnfeld, MSW, RSW, who helps us understand the difference between a teen being “a little blue” and being depressed. He discusses many other signs of depression that parents should watch for and also ways to treat teen depression.

Please join us for this very important show. Gary also has a phenomenal website full of additional information at www.yoursocialworker.com

Parenting My Teen #30

Feb 18, 2008 Author: Christina | Filed under: Parenting My Teen

This week Aurelia tackles some questions about teen dating. She is joined by guest Tricia Gardner from Timesaver VA, who asked some important questions about her own daughter and dating. No doubt other parents of teenagers have these same questions!

Listen in to the advice Aurelia gives about whether or not parents should meet a boyfriend or girlfriend. Would you hand your baby over to a total stranger? No, of course not, yet that’s what parents are doing when they don’t meet their child’s chosen partner. A simple 10-minute visit can begin the process of knowing this person with whom your child is spending time.

Birth control for teens is the other tough question and there are MANY differing viewpoints. Follow your own religious/moral beliefs but just know that ignoring the subject will not make the issue disappear. Many times, if a teen decides to have sex, it will happen with or without birth control.

If you want to voice your own opinion about these questions or have some other questions about teen dating, call our Listeners’ Line at 214-615-6505 ext. 4245

Parenting My Teen - Show #29

Teens are often rebellious and engage in bad or risky behavior. If your teen has broken a household rule, what is your punishment?

This week Aurelia is joined by Jean Walbridge, a licensed clinical social worker and owner of Parenting Adolescents. She helps us understand how to calmly approach our teens to discuss household rules, how to set fair consequences if the rules are broken, and why there is no shame in seeking family counseling with your teen.

Jean says that our teens are still learning how to take care of themselves and they need us, their parents, as their coaches to help guide them and influence their behavior.

Join us this week and learn how to talk with your teen openly and calmly!

Parenting My Teen - Show #28

Jan 21, 2008 Author: Christina | Filed under: Parenting My Teen

We’re talking about BOYS this week!

But not boyfriends. We’re dedicating this show to hearing about the teen years from a boy’s perspective. My guest is Latara Ham-Ying from Vegan Family Living and she shares some stories about what it’s like raising a 15-year-old boy in today’s world.

Latara is very open with sharing her ideas for keeping a relationship open with a teenage son. She also shares some challenges that her son has been faced with and how they have handled these things together. Very often we forget that our sons still need guidance, even when they tower over us and have facial hair.

Join us with an enlightening look into the life of a teenage boy…

Parenting My Teen - Show #26

Dec 10, 2007 Author: Christina | Filed under: Parenting My Teen

In this season of giving, Aurelia is joined this week by Monique Howat from www.ConfidentGirlsGuys.com who shares some funny and original stories of how she taught her three daughters the joy of giving to others.

All too often our kids are busy writing up their wishlists to include the latest and greatest (and most expensive!) gadgets without thinking of those who are less fortunate. Even kids their own ages are in need of food and shelter. You can use this holiday season to teach them a life lesson in giving to others.

Be sure to check out this newest FREE special report from Linda Hinkle to help your teen become successful in math.
